How Donor Area Harvesting Is Reversing Hair Loss for Men and Women

A Solution to Hair Loss

In the US, about 50 million men and 30 million women suffer from hair loss. For years, hair loss was an unavoidable part of aging. As science and technology advanced, so did options for hair regrowth and hair loss prevention.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures have been integral in creating natural results that reverse genetic balding and prevent future hair loss. This process uses donor hair to be placed in areas showing signs of balding.

At Strand MD, highly qualified experts are changing the course of aging with the use of NeoGraft, the most trusted name in hair transplant procedures. People no longer have to settle for a fake-looking alternative to their natural locks. They can go back to experiencing the full head of hair they had in their youth!

What is Donor Hair?

One of the first questions patients ask upon learning about FUE is where donor hair can be found. It is vital for the transplanted hair to match the color and consistency of naturally-occurring hair on the head, so donor hair can only be extracted from existing follicles on the head. Body or beard hair is not a suitable alternative.

The staff at Strand MD guides patients through the process of FUE to ensure discretion and minimal downtime. Men and women with short hair can get the “fade” haircut before grafting, which will minimize attention to the donor site post-procedure. Men and women with longer hair have “layering” options that allow them to pull donor hairs discreetly from the underside of the head and hide the donor site with naturally-occurring layers.

Best Results for Hair Transplant

In order to achieve optimal hair transplant results, it is essential to understand the safe number of donor hairs that can be harvested. It is vital that not to deplete donor sites for potential future transplants or cause localized shock loss to the donor site. This number is calculated by measuring donor density.

On average, the human scalp has approximately 70,000-110,000 hairs. However, when evaluating the donor site, a surgeon can only choose from hairs within the Permanent Zone, which accounts for approximately 20% of the patients’ surface area. Hair in this zone is permanent regardless of the genetic balding pattern.

When examining a patient and their donor area, the surgeon identifies the Permanent Zone (see image), measures the donor density at that site, and calculates the total number of hair follicles that can be extracted without over-grafting. This number is static for the life of the patient.

This calculation is essential, as it allows surgeons to find treatment pathways that best fit patient needs. A good hair restoration specialist is one who is a good planner and experienced in how and when to use combination therapies such as FUE and Micropigmentation.

How Much Donor Hair Do I Need?

Quantity of donor hair varies per patient, with ethnicity playing a large role. Middle Easterners / Caucasians tend to have the most donor counts followed by Asians and Africans, respectively.

On Average, a Caucasian man has approximately 5,000-7000 donor hairs for strip surgery and less for an FUE. This number varies based on the hair diameter and hair type. Generally, straight, fine, and black hair are on the lower end of the spectrum. Wavy, thick, blond or salt and pepper hair require more donor hairs.

The table below gives you an idea of typical measurements in rounded numbers:

Total Scalp Hairs FUE Grafts
110,000 3450
90,000 2600
70,000 1900
